Donnie P. West, Jr.

  Fire Chief Donnie West has been employed with the Center Point Fire District since June 1977. He became one of the youngest paramedics in the State of Alabama at the age of 16. Chief West was promoted through the ranks and is now serving as the Fire Chief and Fire Marshal for the Center Point Fire District and three surrounding municipals. Chief West also was instrumental in developing and implementing the department’s first advanced medical transport service.
Chief West academic achievements include a Paramedic Degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Associate Degree in Fire Science from Jefferson State Community College, Bachelor Degree in Public Safety Administration from Athens State University, Master Degree in Occupational Health and Safety Engineering from Columbia Southern University. He has received national recognition in certifications, which have included the Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP) from the National Fire Academy in Maryland, Certified Chief Officer (CFO) from the Commission on Fire Service Accreditation. In addition, Chief West has received numerous fire service certifications.
Chief West’s instructional history includes such subjects as Basic Life Support, Basic Pediatric Life Support, Red Cross First Aid, First Responder, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support and fire service related courses. He has instructed courses at such teaching institutions as Jefferson State Community College, University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama State Fire College and the National Fire Academy. He currently serves as a professor for Columbia Southern University for their associate and bachelor programs in fire science and occupational health and safety degrees.
Chief West is responsible for the department’s Strategic Plan that encompasses both short and long range planning. He works with local city officials in administering the provisions set-forth by the 2003 International Fire Codes. Other duties involve the department’s water supply, plan reviews, and risk management & pre-employment programs.
Chief West is an active member for many local, state and federal organizations such as the Alabama Firefighter Association, International Firefighter Association, Alabama Fire Chiefs Association, International Fire Chiefs Association, National Fire Protection Association, and International Code Council. He has served on numerous committees that include the University of Alabama Educational Advisory Board, Jefferson County Health Department Disaster Planning Committee, Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency Incident Design Committee and Alabama Emergency Management Command Staff.
Chief West’s professional aspirations are to provide the citizens of the Center Point Fire District an outstanding Fire/EMS service by “Providing Excellence Through Dedication and Pride”.
